The Staccator: Rapid Fire Tongue
The ability to play fast, clear staccato notes is dependent on tonguing technique. To practice this technique, brass and woodwind players typically use their instruments. However, this means the players’ lips are subjected to pressure from the mouthpiece, requiring the musician to use multiple mouth muscles. This does not allow the player to focus on tonguing. The Staccator works by concentrating on the tongue muscle, in order to build its strength so the player may learn to control their tongue muscle better. Created by professional trumpet player Chris Cigolea, Staccator has been endorsed by Chase Sanborn and music instrument retailer Long & McQuade.
