5 Time Management Tactics Every Musician Must Know

time management tactics

It can be hard raising a family, having a career, and following your passion. When life gets busy it is easy to forget about our favorite hobbies. That’s why we need to manage our time well and schedule in those activities that are important to us. Luckily, Ariel Hyatt and her team at Cyber PR have created a list of  “5 Time Management Tactics Every Musician Must Know.

TACTIC #1 – PLAN

Planning is the Key

Mapping out your plan isn’t just essential, it is literally the answer to effective time management. It is the foundation on which the rest of your time management strategies are built, so let’s discuss this one first.

Whether it is at the top of the year, quarter, month, week or day, you should have a plan of attack.

It is so important to plan out your day, especially when you want to fit in your music. When I was in college, I was very busy outside of the classroom and found it difficult to find time to practice. I sat down with my professor one day and he had me write out my schedule for the week and the month (classes, clubs, work, etc.) and then we scheduled in specific practice times. All of a sudden it was easy to find time to practice and play music. The emphasis Ariel puts on planning is key to fitting in time to follow your passion.

TACTIC #2 – PRIORITIZE

Prioritize What You Want First

It’s important to understand that not all of your tasks hold the same weight.

Prioritizing is super important in anything you do. As Ariel mentions, not every task you have at hand is as important as the next. If music is something you want to practice religiously every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, let’s say, then on those days make it a priority. In the time you have set aside for practice, focus only on the music and don’t think about everything else you may have to do that day or that week. At that moment, make your music number one on the list. This will help you practice more efficiently and, in the end, save time for your other activities.
