In 2012, musician and former publisher Gregg Kirk created the Ticked Off Music Fest to support the prevention, awareness, and cure of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. Kirk has been battling Lyme disease for almost a decade. Following what he describes as “a spiritual awakening,” Kirk has devoted his time to helping others and fundraising for this disease. He is also the leader of The Zen Engines, a band fueled by Kirk’s experiences with the disease.
Katina Makris is also active in the Ticked Off effort. She is a public speaker, writer, teacher, and the award-winning author of the book Out of the Woods; Healing Lyme Disease—Body, Mind & Spirit. She also hosts the radio show Lyme Light Radio with Katina, which has guests who shed light on Lyme disease, the US’s fastest-spreading infectious illness.
The next Ticked Off event takes place May 29 in Atlanta. The music fest continues throughout the summer, making a stop in Eugene, Oregon, on July 18. Events are meant to drive awareness and education about the disease and its symptoms, give tips on prevention, and connect those suffering from illness with Lyme-educated doctors.
