Musical Immortality
The 1,000-year-long musical composition Longplayer was conceived and created by Jem Finer, a British composer and musician with the punk band The Pogues. One piece from each of six short pieces of music play simultaneously at all times and combine in ways so that no combination will be repeated for exactly 1,000 years. Longplayer began playing at midnight, December 31, 1999 and will continue until January 1, 2999, when it will have completed its cycle and begin again. You can hear Longplayer at public listening posts including at The Long Now Foundation Museum in San Francisco, and several locations in London.
Now, the Longplayer Trust, the organization in charge of Longplayer, has completed a Kickstarter campaign to create Longplayer for Voices. Finer will work with 240 singers to create the new vocal version of Longplayer. The 1,000-minute, or 16-hour and 40-minute Longplayer for Voices is scheduled to launch Fall 2018.
