As a child, singing was more than just a fun activity for Jessica Brown, it was her best means of communication. “I had a stuttering problem when I was little,” she says.
“I loved to talk, but I knew I couldn’t talk,” she explaining that she realized her stutteringmade her different. “As I started to express myself to my friends, I noticed that they didn’t respond to me like they did my other friends.”
But, when she sang, everyone listened. “It was the only way I figured out how to express myself,” she says. Later, she began writing and performing her own songs.
Brown, now 24, has become an Internet singing sensation with more than 1.5 million Likes on Facebook, she’s the current number one artist on Reverbnation. Her mostly homemade music videos range from covers to her compositions and live performances, like when she sang the national anthem at an Arizona Diamondbacks game.
She says most of her songs were inspired by people she’s met. “I’ve always been good at putting myself in other peoples’ shoes,” she says. “I also write music from past experiences and current experiences, but I feel like I get a lot of my emotions by channeling other peoples’ feelings and then relating them to myself.”
Brown says she feels fortunate to have had people in her life to encourage her and help her. First and foremost, she credits her parents. “They’ve always believed in me and my fullest potential,” she says.
“When I first started singing and songwriting I was very reserved about it,” says Brown. In the early days she did some performances with hip-hop artist Robbie B. “That experience helped me to be more comfortable in my own skin as a musician and really express myself. It’s okay to mess up, to be silly. You have to be willing to put yourself out there and be completely and utterly yourself.”
Brown just graduated from college with a degree in marketing and communications, with concentration in PR, which will surely help her as she works toward a career in the music industry.
