Bulletproof Stockings
Bulletproof Stockings, an all-female alternative rock band out of Brooklyn, New York, is gaining a loyal following both online and for live shows that are “ladies only.” Founded by two Hasidic women, keyboardist and vocalist Perl Wolfe and drummer Dalia Shusterman, the band now includes cello, violin, and guitar. It’s not that the band members are anti-men, but under Jewish law the kol isha commandment states men are not permitted to listen to the singing voice of women outside of their immediate families. So, the women are not prohibited from performing; it is the men who are prohibited from listening.
“We’re focused on creating a space for women to be free with their creativity without having to worry about any projections or innuendos. And a lot of women, Jewish and non-Jewish, are appreciating that,” the band explains on the Bulletproof Stockings Reverbnation site.
