Big Purple Inflatable Concert Hall
When Michael Haefliger, director of the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, first heard about the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan he thought he had to do something to help. The answer ended up being the inflatable, mobile concert hall “Ark Nova.” Resembling a large purple doughnut, the hall is about 60 feet tall with ceiling and can seat about 500 people on benches. Its walls are made of PVC-coated polyester membrane that’s held aloft solely by giant fans; there’s no internal structure. Ark Nova’s debut was in Matsushima, Japan, for a special Lucerne Festival this past September.
