The second grade class at Lake Forest Country Day School (LFCDS) started a pretty interesting semester long project part of the STEAM program (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math). The students are designing their own musical instrument that must be playable. They are drafting their own blueprints and will construct the musical instrument from recycled materials. The students are learning all about sound waves and how they can produce music. This project also teaches them about engineering and design, along with the overall concept of how science plays a factor in the creation of the instruments.
The aim is for their instruments to be able to make three different pitches and the final goal is to have the students create a musical score that they can perform together.
Needless to say, this is a pretty cool idea to keep kids interested in learning and teaches them multiple subjects on various fronts. Maybe this is a project you could do with any children in your life. Leave some comments below if you have any cool music projects you’d like to share.
