Roxy Music Breaks Up… Again
It has been over three-and-a-half years since Roxy Music has really done anything. The guitarist Phil Manzanera told Rolling Stone, “I don’t think we’re going to do any more shows. I think our job is done. When we stopped touring in 2011, Andy [Mackay] and I looked at each other and said, ‘Our job is done here.'”
The last Roxy Music album was in 1982 (Avalon) and the band split up the following year. Then Manzanera, Mackay, Paul Thompson, and Bryan Ferry reunited in 2001 for the band’s 30th anniversary. They toured on and off the following years.
Roxy Music claimed in 2005 that they were making an album, but that turned into Bryan Ferry’s solo album Olympia. They teased another album in 2007, but that never worked out either.
“Musicians like to do new things,” Manzanera said, “It’s unfortunate for the fans, really, because they would like you to play the same old stuff forever and ever. And they go see it and they feel like, ‘Man, they aren’t as good as they used to be.’ I’m very happy doing new things. I’ve got a couple of albums coming in the next year.”
Deluxe reissues of their first two albums with extra material are due to be released in 2015.
