With two brand new releases, Simeon Flick steps boldly into the new reality we all know as life right now. The first: Scarlotti’s Greatest Hits — a refreshing choice artistically, as it highlights the works of Domenico Scarlotti, who lived adventurously as a composer, integrating musical ideas from the street, so-to-speak, to be implemented into his otherwise Baroque works . The Scarlotti works — originally performed on harpsichord — are adapted to traditional classical guitar, which encourages Flick to introduce a few subtle advancements of his own adaptations.
Then he followed-up immediately with another full-length release, Gung Ho Hum, an alternative rock mix drenched in intelligent guitar wielding. On electric guitar Simeon Flick enters an entirely different dynamic. In this rock dynamic, Flick is in total control and eloquent while remaining entirely dangerous. Along with the mindful and insightful lyrical relevance, Simeon Flick in this mix rides with the daring.
Independence
Simeon Flick is an independent heritage artist who writes and performs accessibly innovative alternative R&B music with an uncanny ear for maddeningly adhesive pop hooks and an earnest message seamlessly woven in no matter what the topic. He has built a formidable reputation and a connoisseur following with his soulful voice, versatile musicality, multi-instrumental mastery, engaging live performances, and inspirational songs with poignant, pertinent, erudite lyrics. Having semi-retired from the live performance arena, Simeon is now predominantly a creature of the studio, crafting and perfecting all of his skills in the presentation and preservation of his work on celluloid, sending his albums on tour like the Beatles did post-August of ’66.
Flick is enjoying an illustrious career, having shared stages with the likes of No Doubt, Sublime, Fishbone, The Untouchables, School of Fish, Rocket From The Crypt, Three Mile Pilot, Heavy Vegetable, The Samples, The Skeletones, Skankin’ Pickle, Excel, Voodoo Glowskulls, Ozomatli, Geggy Tah, Matt Nathanson, and Leftover Salmon. As a San Diego-based solo artist he has co-billed with Veruca Salt, Glenn Phillips (Toad The Wet Sprocket), Jimmy Gnecco (OURS), Noe Venable, Ari Hest, Brodeeva (G Love & Special Sauce), Saucy Monky, Transfer, Jakob Martin, Earl Thomas, Peter Sprague, Tom Brosseau, Gregory Page, Steve Poltz, Carlos Olmeda, Lisa Sanders, Berkeley/Hart, Anya Marina, Steph Johnson, Christopher Dale, Danielle LoPresti, Alicia Champion, Michael Tiernan, and Thomas Lee (Bo Bice).
The Early Strumming
Flick grew up in Palo Alto, California, went down South and played college ball at the University of Redlands outside of LA , did a band called CRUX (two cassettes and a demo), graduated, stayed on in Redlands and did a band called Sages of Memphis (two CDs and a cassette demo), left for graduate school in Boulder CO for the Spring ’99 semester, spent the turn of the millennium in Arizona driving a black truck with no AC, moved to San Diego in 2001, put out seven solo albums (with an eighth on the way) and played lots of music with lots of people, wrote a lot of press for the San Diego Troubadour, sang on a lot of jingles, met his wife Allison in 2002 and married her four years later, signed on to Instant Encore in 2005 (and said goodbye in 2010), played with Followers (2007-2009), has been gigging with SCRATCH (March 2010-Present), Christopher Dale and the Rabbit Hole, Jetpack Mojo … and more.
Simeon Says…
“Practice as much as you can before age becomes a limitation. Keep learning. Try not to limit yourself stylistically; listen to any and every kind of music you can stomach. Think polyphonically. Listen in general; even if you’re playing a solo, you still have to know what key you’re in, and where the dynamics are going. Pay attention to what the other instruments are doing, let that influence you, give you ideas, connect with your fellow musicians. Have fun!”
